We need to avoid the last two weekends in May because of the Charlotte race. Hotel rooms within 150 miles of Charlotte will be jacked up high. I could not personally attend the first weekend of June because I will be in Dover for the Nascar race. EDIT: The THIRD weekend in May is the Ocean City meet.

First two weekends in April also have NASCAR related hotel price problems.

Very last weekend of April is bad too.

2nd, 3rd & 4th weekends of June are OK but Carlisle comes up in early July

So from April through end of June the choices I see are

April 16
April 23 (My birthday)
May 14th
June 11
June 18
June 25

My vote is for June 11th or June 18th

Just an update..... I have talked to my parents and told them to find out when the car show is in Maggie Valley. As soon as I hear from them I'll post it on here. I am wanting to think it is in the spring.....but not sure.

looks like we have a Quality Inn and a Ramada right in Maggie Valley with great rates

Also Unto these Hills is an ABSOLUTE must see in my opinion.

Haha, do you realize that I live there for 19 years and never went and saw that. I guess it's sorta like I live down at the beach now, but we always go to the beach to eat, and never get in the ocean.

It's either the first or last weekend in June for me. Third weekend is my annual Golf, canoe, golf geezer weekend.

You guys tell me when to start making plans, and I'll call up there and make plans for whatever weekend......

So both the second and third weekend are out? Or did you mean only one weekend was blocked out?

I am looking pretty hard at June 10th - 12th

Don,

I was thinking around the same time. I hope that he meant just the third weekend was out..... :?

I'll plan on any weekend in June. (When's Father's Day)? I wish we could do Memorial Day, it'd be a long weekend but the prices would be jacked up.

I think April is still a little chilly up there especially for rafting!

Sixftundr: I thought you moved to Atlanta! (?) Maybe I'm thinking of someone else....? Waynesville, huh? I think I've been there. What's it near?

Anyways guys WHERE are we going in NC? Where do you guys want to stay? What's central to all or the majority of the activities we want to do?
Do you want to stay in the MOUNTAINS or the FOOTHILLS? Shall we throw some ideas around and see who wants to do what?

Then the question is how long does everyone want to stay? Do we want to plan some group activities?

Don, where is Unto These Hills? I've never been but suspect I would love it.

Maggie Valley - isn't that just over the Georgia line?

Nope, I haven't moved yet....it's coming in January though. Waynesville is about 20 miles east of Asheville and is right next to Maggie Valley. In fact Waynesville and Maggie Valley are one long strip. "Unto These Hills" is in Cherokee NC, which is about 20-25 min drive from Maggie Valley.

Waynesville is about 25 miles west of Asheville and so is Maggie Valley. The are both in Haywood County. The northern part of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is also in Haywood County.

Unto the Hills is an outdoor amphitheatre presentation of the story of the Cherokee Indian History.

It is similar to the Cross and the Sword in St. Augustine.

We could also do the casino in Cherokee.

Yes there is a Casino over there. Part of the Reservation.

The 3rd weekend is out for me but, any other would be fine. As long as I'm back home by the 17th.
I can either do the meet coming or going (from/to Myrtle Beach). Looks like we have some pretty good interest here. Let's Roll!!

I have to agree, I think this is something we need to do.

Ok, as it looks right now, it will be the second weekend in June if that is alright with everyone.

Now to start planning what to do when we get there.....

Oh my Gawd, George! January is NOT a good time to move to Georgia. Worst weather of the year! Expect possible snow, ice, sleet, name it....! I remember when I moved there Nov, 1994 or 95. Direct from Florida; the gas company said it would take a couple of months to get the heat and hot water on. Dec 8th, it went down to 8 degrees below, an all time record. I think I had pneumonia until the next summer. No lie! I owned exactly 2 sweaters - Florida weight. The shelves in the stores were BARE, everything warm was gone! I damn near died!

Do yourself a BIG favor and prepare now! At the least grab a kerosense heater and try to grab a load or two of firewood. There won't be any seasoned wood left by January. Trust me!

Okay, now back to Waynesville, Maggie Valley, Asheville....sounds cool. I'll do a search and see what's shaking up that way.

Don, thanks, I know what UNTO THESE HILLS is about. I always wanted to go, just couldn't get my ex to (no beer-no go). I have a "little" Cherokee in me - (doesn't everybody)?

Vegas-the casino in Cherokee, well.... what can I say? The house wins, dude, ya know, like always....? The baptist buses (REPENT YOU SINNERS)! HA! will run you down getting in there. It is definately a dry county.

What's really cool is winding your way up through real indian territory to the TRAIL OF TEARS. You can actually get lost winding your way up that mountain. I really feel something there.....on the way you can stop close to real indians and if you are nice and humble they may talk to you, which I consider an honor since we are all gringo's or whatever they call us.

Don't forget to set the clocks back tonight guys....

Haha, I love that cold weather. I actually miss the snow and stuff like that we had in the mountains. Today the high is suppose to be 85 here. Too warm for the first of November if you ask me.

I love winter. Absolutely my favorite time of year. Every time there is a major blizzard (12" or more) I am out of the house on the roads the entire time. I get tons of overtime and I run errands for all my neighbors.

The January 1996 blizzard dropped 26" of snow in one day and 44" in a week near Washington DC. During that blizzard I was on vacation with my parents in Maggie Valley. The snow levels there were only slightly less. I was the first vehicle of ANY type to drive west out of Maggie across Soco Gap into Cherokee. I had to stop 6 times just to hook up a chain or rope to a fallen tree to get it out of the road so I could get through. There were several times where I stopped and just wondered at the living Currier and Ives real world ahead of me. For about 15-20 miles mostly in Jackson County I cleared the road and made the first tracks in the virgin snow. This is truly one of the most memorable days of my life.

I absolutely suffer in Summer. Anything over 80 degrees is murder for me. I'll take snow any day.
